Fun Shark Facts

Most shark species do not sleep

Do you know that most shark species are continuous swimmers?

Although not all species are continues swimmers, some species may die if they were to sleep and stop moving.

Many sharks need to move their bodies through the water to ensure freshwater flows over their gills.

This is to ensure the oxygen level inside the body is maintained.

But this does not mean that these swimming species cannot take a rest.

Studies show that sharks that have to keep moving can rest one part of their brain.

They can keep their eyes open and the brain active to respond to any dangers.

Also, for some, the swimming is conducted by the spinal cord.

Hence, they can move while sleeping; It is like when a man talks or walks while sleeping.

So, even though they do not have formal sleep, they have several periods of inactivity.
