In Corel Painter Essentials 5 you can use various types of art tools to create stunning paintings like this pastel lotus drawing. In this tutorial we will be using the pastel tool in combination with the soft charcoal and sharp charcoal pencil tool to create this amazing painting.
Tools of the Trade
- Corel Painter Essentials 5
- Wacom Bamboo Graphics Tablet
- A computer mouse
In order to begin drawing you must find an image to work with and go to the PHOTO PAINTING MENU located on the right side of the screen.
Click on the BROWSE BUTTON to open your photo and prepare it for the next step.
Don’t worry if you don’t see anything on the screen, once you hit the start button, Corel Painter will start drawing on the screen.
In the “auto paint” feature you will see a pre-style selector drop-down box with a variety of styles to choose from.
For this specific painting I chose the PASTEL DRAWING preset. Once you made your selection press the triangular START BUTTON to begin drawing.
Give Painter a few seconds to create your drawing before going to the next step.
Now we can begin adding our final touches by going to the PHOTO PAINTING BRUSHES MENU located on the left side of the screen.
Click on the SOFT CLONER TOOL to open up the menu where all the art tools are located.
For this pastel drawing I selected the CHALK, PASTEL, CRAYONS TOOL and on the right side select SOFT CHARCOAL.
Begin by using the soft charcoal tool to blend some of the colors with each other to make it look fluid.
You can use your graphics tablet to blend out the large areas of your drawing and then use you computer mouse for smaller details.
Once your done, select the SHARP CHARCOAL PENCIL tool to sharpen the areas you want your viewers to see.
Tips and Suggestions
When using the sharp charcoal pencil tool pay attention the the opacity level of the tool. Try keeping the opacity level low so that the lines look more natural.
You can also highlight or darken certain parts of an object in your picture with the sharp charcoal pencil.
Get familiar with the size of the tool by going to the top menu bar and adjusting the size.
Most importantly don’t forget to save your work regularly by clicking on the “save disk” icon on the top menu bar.
