On the photo, menu clicks on the BROWSE BUTTON to search for your photo. The next step is to tell Corel Painter which art style you want to apply to your image.

This boat sketch was created with the PENCIL DRAWING preset style on the drop down menu.

Once you click on the start button, Corel Painter will automatically start drawing the sketch for you.

Now that it’s complete, we want to enhance the way our design looks. For my boat sketch, I wanted to add some darker lines to some areas of the boat to make it look more realistic.

Search for the PHOTO PAINTING BRUSHES MENU on the top left the side of the screen. Corel Painter will automatically have the SOFT CLONER BRUSH highlighted on the menu.

Click on the PENCIL, PENS AND MARKERS TOOL and on the right side of the menu select FLAT WET SUMI-E.

flat wet sumi-e tool will darken some areas to make it look like a two dimension drawing or give it more depth.

Special Note: pay close attention to the OPACITY MENU on the top side toolbar, it’s reduced to 2{2662ae3408ee1e3c8ae220b03dfc3ab9cc89014e5e7d68bedbc8b34d989f7038}.

Tips and Suggestions

With this particular pencil drawing preset you can experiment even further by add different elements like darker lines, paper texture or different line strokes.

I’ve found that images with one or few large objects in the picture work best. For example, I chose the boat because there was only one object in the picture and it had only a few colors.

Also in this boat sketch, there wasn’t much going on in the background to distract the viewers.
