In Corel Painter Essentials 5 you can create different types of paintings like this watercolor digital horse painting.
This tutorial will show you the tools in Corel Painter that I used to paint this picture.
Tools of the Trade
- Corel Painter Essentials 5
- Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet
- A Computer Mouse
The first place you want to go is to the PHOTO PAINTING MENU located on the right side of Corel Painter.
As you see in the image above, there are three sections of the menu that you can use.
For this lesson, I used the first two parts and skipped the “paint by hand” option, so select any image from your computer by pressing the BROWSE BUTTON on the menu.
Enlarge your image by using your computer mouse scroll button and scroll forward. Once you have a perfect size, you need to decide on what type of preset style you want to use.
Where it says “auto paint” go to the drop-down menu and select WATERCOLOR SKETCH. Now Corel Painter is ready to start painting, click on the START TRIANGLE BUTTON to begin the process.
You will know that Corel Painter has finished your work when the mouse icon changes from a timer icon to a regular circle.
Take a look at the left side of the screen and familiarize yourself with the PHOTO PAINTING BRUSHES MENU indicated in the image above.
The first thing you will notice is that Corel Painter uses the SOFT CLONER BRUSH to create your initial drawing.
For my watercolor horse sketch, I wanted to make the background look and feel as smooth as possible without weird looking lines.
I used the SPONGES TOOL and the SMEARY WET SPONGE TOOL to smear the soft colors over the dark colors.
To achieve best results, start with the lightest colors and drag them into the dark color textures.
Tips and Suggestions
Remember to adjust the size of the tool by going to the top toolbar and adjusting the SIZE slider.
While you are working on your photo, try not to smear over the primary object of your image so that it stands out more and it looks realistic.
Don’t worry if you make a mistake; you can undo a paint stroke by hitting the UNDO BUTTON ARROW on the top of the toolbar.
Repeat the smearing process until you’re satisfied with the final results.
